Charles Dooman, a lifelong artist, has created art in almost every medium; from charcoals and pastels to sculpture, silkscreens, block prints and watercolors. Since 1990 he has turned his creative attention exclusively toward the full-time production of automotive art.He prefers to paint with acrylics on canvas as he strives to emphasize the beautifully abstract, yet graphic imagery that can be found only when one takes the detailed micro-view deep into the soul of the automobile. Should the viewer mentally remove the details specific to the subject car, one can't help but notice how the abstract qualities of shape and color, not the cars themselves, are the real focus of his work.
This extremely unique approach, along with the graphic boldness of hyper-realism, highlight the wonderful beauty inherent in all classic, exotic and top of the line contemporary automobiles. To Charles, these cars are not merely objects of art, or even pieces of art in and of themselves. Rather, he views them more like the soul of a woman and the beauty to be found therein; the deeper one looks, the more beauty one finds.
Charles' paintings continually search for the ever elusive artistic soul of the car and offer proof that these cars contain more art inside of them than the designers ever realized. His increasingly popular work has often been described as that of "the Andy Warhol of automotive art."
Originally from Chicago, he grew up in the Midwest and currently makes his home in Wichita, Kansas. His work can be found in numerous collections throughout North America as well as England, Holland, Germany and Japan.
